Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matt Johnson

Huskies conclude season in draw with Golden Bears

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's soccer team season came to an end on Sunday, following a 0-0 draw against the visiting Alberta Golden Bears at Griffiths Stadium.

Entering the day, the Huskies needed a positive result, plus some help out of town in order to reach the Canada West postseason.

Unfortunately for Saskatchewan, a MacEwan Griffins victory over the Calgary Dinos earlier in the afternoon spelled an end to the Huskies season, regardless of their result versus Alberta.

Nonetheless, it was a valiant effort from the green-and-white, who recorded a draw against the playoff-bound Golden Bears.

"I think today was a perfect example of who we have on the field," said Huskies head coach Bryce Chapman. "They played a really good game. They battled the full 94 minutes. I don't know if I could have squeezed anything more out of this group."

The match served as the final opportunity for Tobias Hyrich-Krueger to suit up for the program, spelling the end to a four-year playing career with the Huskies, spending five years with the program.

"It's been everything the last five years," said Hyrich-Krueger. "The culture. The feeling. You can't really describe it in words, I've been absolutely honoured since day one, since I've stepped on this pitch."

What Hyrich-Krueger brought to the program is something not lost on Chapman.

"His leadership, his commitment to the program, his engine, it just rises above everyone," said Chapman. "We're definitely going to miss him, but he's heading into a good place and I think he'll be pleased when he looks back on his Huskies career."

While this is the end of the 2021-22 season for the Huskies, the Golden Bears will move along in their pursuit of a Canada West Championship, as they are set to play host to the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack next weekend in Edmonton.

Bateman Cup:

The match served as the annual Bateman Cup match on Sunday. The Bateman Cup was established in 2016 to honour veterans from the First World War from Saskatoon and was named after Reginald John Godfrey Bateman. Bateman, a former professor at uSask, was the university's captain of their soccer team before enlisting in the war in 1914.

The game is played each year against Alberta, who served as Saskatchewan's first-ever inter university soccer opponent, when they took the pitch against one-another in 1911.

For the second time in Bateman Cup history, the programs shared the trophy after the 0-0 draw.
