Huskies enter playoffs on 11-game streak after sweep of Cougars

REGINA - Six different Huskies found the back of the net as the University of Saskatchewan won 6-2 and completed the weekend sweep over the University of Regina men's hockey team at the Co-operators Centre on Saturday evening.
 
Layne Young, Kohl Bauml, Gordie Ballhorn, Logan McVeigh, Carter Folk and Andrew Johnson each had a goal for the Huskies. Tristan Frei and Connor Odelein scored for the Cougars.
 
Frei scored the first goal of the game with 1:14 seconds left in the period. Ben Duperreault brought the puck into the Huskies zone and took a quick shot on net the goaltender blocked the shot. The puck then bounced out to Frei who buried it into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Turner Ripplinger also assisted on the play.
 
Young responded for the Huskies midway through the second period. Levi Cable stole the puck from a Cougars defender deep in Regina's zone and proceeded to fire a shot on net the rebound bounced out to Young who fired it on net finding twine. Bauml and Ballhorn also scored in the second period giving the Huskies a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
 
The third period started out strong for the Cougars as Odelein scored early and reduced the Huskies lead to one goal. Saskatchewan's defence stood their ground as Regina struggled to get a shot on net throughout the rest of the period. With 6:47 left in the game McVeigh scored for the Huskies to extend their lead to 4-2. In the final minute of play Folk and Johnson made the game 6-2 for Saskatchewan.
 
Taran Kozun made 11 saves for the Huskies in the win as they improve to 22-4-2 while Dawson MacAuley made 30 saves for the Cougars who finish the season with an 8-17-3 record.
 
Saskatchewan will now have a bye week after finishing second in the Canada West, awaiting the opponent they will welcome to Merlis Belsher Place for the conference semifinals from Feb. 21-24.
