SASKATOON – A chance to test their mettle against one of the top teams in the nation is ahead for a University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's volleyball team that is close to clinching their second-consecutive playoff berth.
Â
The Huskies will welcome a red-hot Alberta Golden Bears club to town, with the visitors set to take the court on Friday as winners in their last eight-straight games.
Â
Saskatchewan (9-9) sit in a tie for sixth in the conference, and with the top eight teams making the playoffs can go a long way in securing their spot with a pair of positive results against the second place Golden Bears (16-4).
Â
After a split with the Mount Royal Cougars last weekend, the Huskies are 3-3 in the calendar year, splitting all three of their weekends so far in 2019-20. Alberta meanwhile are the second-hottest team in the conference with their last loss coming back on November 8 to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
Â
These two teams split a pair of games in Edmonton last season, with the Huskies picking up a big 3-2 victory on Friday night before falling 3-1 on Saturday.
Â
5 Things
Â
1: Prior to the game Saskatchewan will honour three fifth-year players. As
Daulton Sinoski,
Cole Burkart and
Daven Pascal will all suit up on home court for the last time in their Huskie careers.
Â
2: At the second set break on Saturday the Huskies will recognize Adam Ens and Darcey Busse, both former USask stars who were recently inducted into the Canada West Hall of Fame.
Â
3: Friday night will be Spike Out Bullying night inside the PAC. The Huskies will wear pink warmup shirts in collaboration with SaskTel's Be Kind Online campaign.
Â
4: Since gaining a more prominent role in the team, fifth-year outside hitter
Cole Burkart has been on a tear. The former NAIT Ook joined the team last season and after recording 13 kills through the first year and a half with the team, the product of Edmonton has 64 over his last four games.
Â
5: Golden Bear's setter Max Elgert leads the conference with 10.27 assists per set, keying an offence that is third in the conference in hitting percentage.
