SASKATOON – Setter
CJ Gavlas made program history but it wasn't enough for the Saskatchewan Huskies to overcome a Winnipeg Wesmen squad that won 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 26-24) inside the PAC.
Gavlas, a fourth-year setter from Saskatoon moved past Cole Hintz with career assist 2951 in the game, moving him into first place in program history.
Ethan Duncan was extremely efficient for the visitors, finishing on 16 of his 34 swings. Daniel Thiessen had 10 kills and Nigel Nielsen eight to round out the scoring for the Wesmen.
Fifth-year hitter
Cole Burkart continued the best stretch of his Huskie career with 18 kills. Coming into the weekend Burkart had just eight kills on the season and exiting the product of Edmonton will have 43.
A large difference in the game was efficiency in attack. After hitting an even .000 in the first set, Winnipeg rebounded and failed to hit under .250 as a team throughout the rest of the contest.
Saskatchewan was able to take advantage of those Wesmen mistakes in the first set, hitting .381 as a team themselves en route to the 25-18 victory.
The rest of the game belonged to the Wesmen however with the visitors winning the remaining three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 26-24.
Duncan powered the Wesmen to victory with seven kills in the second set, while a pair of Huskie service errors ended the third.
The home team fought back in the fourth but with the scored tied 23-23 the Wesmen took control for good.
A dominant block put up by Teetaert and Thiessen forced some mistakes from the Huskies attack as the Wesmen went on to take the set and the match.
With the win the Wesmen move one game clear of the Huskies for fifth place in the conference standings.
The Huskies will be on a bye next weekend. Winnipeg meanwhile will return home to take on the MacEwan Griffins
