CALGARY – An early start and two quick second period goals pushed the University of Saskatchewan Huskies over the University of Calgary Dinos in a 4-0 final on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
Levi Cable and
Carson Stadnyk each had a tally while
Jared Dmytriw scored twice in just under 30 seconds to secure the win for the Huskies.
With the win tonight, the Huskies improve to 14-4-2 to break the deadlock with the Dinos and take over sole position of second place in the Canada West standings.
An early high sticking penalty against the Dinos gave Saskatchewan's power play unit a chance to strike first. A scramble in front of Calgary goaltender Matthew Greenfield resulted in a puck squeaking through for Cable, putting his eighth goal of the season into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long in the second for the Huskies to double their advantage.
Jared Dmytriw fired a shot from the point that took a dive on Greenfield and into the back of the net just 42 seconds into the frame. Dmytriw wasn't done there when just 29 seconds later took it upon himself to bury the 3-0 goal for his side.
In the third,
Carson Stadnyk would snipe one past the glove of Greenfield to extend the lead to 4-0, which proved to be the final score.
Greenfield stopped 21 of the 25 shots he faced while on the other side of the ice
Taran Kozun posted an impressive 34 save shutout.
The Dinos will try and get themselves back to even with Saskatchewan Saturday night in Calgary for the second game of the series, with puck drop set for 6 p.m. MT.
