SASKATOON –After sweeping their provincial rival Regina Cougars in the conference quarter-finals, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's basketball team will travel west to take on the Calgary Dinos as they attempt to spoil the number two ranked team in the nation's so-far perfect season.
Â
The Huskies enter the semifinal in the midst of a run. Saskatchewan has won six of their past eight games, with all of the victories coming against eventual playoff teams.
The Huskies last playoff victory over the Dinos took place back in the 2009-10 Canada West Championship game, which helped propel Saskatchewan to their first national championship in program history.
Â
Calgary has been the powerhouse of the Canada West all season long and will attempt to continue their dominance this weekend. The Dinos finished the regular season with a 20-0 record and swept the Winnipeg Wesmen this past weekend at Jack Simpson Gym.
Â
The Huskies and Dinos matched up back in back in November, with Calgary coming out victorious in back-to-back games. Brett Layton and David Kapinga combined for 44 points on 18-24 shooting to pace the Dinos offensively, as they defeated the Huskies 105-63 on the opening night of the back-to-back. Calgary followed their series-opening win up with a second consecutive victory over Saskatchewan by a score of 107-89 to seal the sweep.
5 Things
Â
1:
Alexander Dewar was named the Blue Cross Huskie Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Huskies sweep of the Cougars. The first-year guard registered 25 points on Thursday night, and followed that up with a 19-point outing on Friday to send Saskatchewan to the semifinals.
Â
2: Fifth-year forward
Joseph Barker was named a third team all-star in his final year with the program. Meanwhile, Dewar, a fellow Saskatoon native, earned conference recognition as he was named to the all-rookie team.
Â
3: Mambi Diawara and David Kapinga were each named Canada West first-team all-stars, while Brett Layton received a second-team nod.
Â
4: Calgary and Saskatchewan will tangle for the third-consecutive postseason. The Dinos swept the Huskies in a best-of-three series last year in Calgary and picked up a 111-106 overtime victory over the green and white in the 2016-17 Canada West bronze medal game.
Â
5: Calgary is the defending Canada West Champion and National Champion after the program picked up their first U SPORTS title with a 79-77 victory over the Ryerson Rams in Halifax last season.
By the Numbers
Â
9 – Calgary received nine first-place votes in the national rankings and were the only team other than Carleton, who are winners of seven of the past eight national championships, to register a first-place vote.
Â
10 – Saskatchewan enters the weekend as the tenth ranked team in the nation.
Â
49 –
Lawrence Moore led the way for the Huskies last weekend, as the fifth-year guard registered 49 points throughout the two-game sweep. Moore poured in 25 points in game one and followed it up with a game-high 24-point outing in game two to seal the series.
Â
66.0 – The Dinos limited their opponents to 66.0 points-per-game this season, which was lowest in the Canada West.
Scouting the Dinos
Dan Vanhooren has been the head coach of Calgary since 2000, where he has helped guide the Dinos to four conference championships. Calgary has won two of the past three Canada West titles.
Â
The Dinos limited their opponents to 36.9 percent from the field and 26.6 percent from three-point range this season, both of which were the lowest clips in the conference.
Â
Calgary had five players average over double-figures in scoring during the regular season. Mambi Diawara led the way with 17.9 points per game.
