SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's volleyball team will fight for their playoff lives this weekend when they welcome the Mount Royal Cougars to Saskatoon in the final weekend of regular season action.
Â
After the Huskies fell short on Friday night in Kamloops, the team bounced back on Saturday to pick up the series split against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack. The Huskies now sit four points out of a playoff spot with two games remaining and will need a sweep and some help in the standings in order to squeak into the postseason.
Â
Saskatchewan will need consecutive victories and for the Manitoba Bisons to get swept in Langley by the Trinity Western Spartans. From there the tie-breakers will come into play to separate the squads and determine who is bound for the playoffs.
Â
Meanwhile, Mount Royal is fresh off a monster five-set victory over their cross-town rival Calgary Dinos, which places them only two points back of the three-way tie for sixth in the standings. With a 10-12 record, the Cougars sit just two points out of the eighth and final spot in the Canada West. The Thompson Rivers WolfPack, Manitoba Bisons and MacEwan Griffins all sit at 11-11 with two games remaining, leaving the door open for Mount Royal to squeak into the postseason.
Â
Saskatchewan and Mount Royal met last season in Saskatoon, with the visitors coming away with a 3-1 win on Friday, Nov. 24, but the Huskies rebounded the following night with a five-set victory to pick up the split.Â
