Huskies fight for five set victory over Heat

KELOWNA, B.C. – Fighting back from an early deficit the University of Saskatchewan Huskies dominated when it mattered most en route to a 3-2 victory and weekend sweep over the UBC Okanagan Heat.

In a match that featured momentum swings throughout, it was the Huskies who took the match by the scruff of the neck in the fifth, capturing the final frame (15-5) for the victory.

It was Dylan Mortensen leading the way for the Saskatchewan attack on the night, as the second leading attacker in the conference racked up 19 kills, eight digs and five total blocks the victory. Daulton Sinoski was the only other attack to finish in double-figures for the visitors, racking up 10.

Saskatchewan hit .302 as a team in the match, compared to .079 for the hometown Heat. The Huskies block also made it tough on the home team all night long, racking up 13 total blocks, while UBCO had just eight.

While both Vanderveen and Heppel played their part of the offensive end, it was Shawn Zhao who provided the spark on the night. Zhao, who was seeing playing time for the first time all conference season, came off the bench and put up five kills on five attacks late on.

UBCO (0-8)  will get their bye week next weekend, but will return to action against the Brandon Bobcats (7-1) on the road in two weeks time. The Huskies (5-3) will travel to Langley next weekend to face the No. 1 team in the country, the Trinity Western Spartans (7-1).
