Comeback effort falls just short for Huskies

KELOWNA, B.C. – In a complete role reversal of their Friday night matchup, the UBC Okanagan Heat women would come out on top this time in five sets against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

A Jade Bussard run from the service line gave UBCO the advantage in the fifth (11-7) but four points from the visitors tied things back up at 11-all.

After being tied at 13 in the fifth, a service error from the Huskies was followed with a miscommunication on match point that led to the UBCO victory.

It was the Heat who captured the opening two sets this time around, with the Huskies battling back to force a fifth and decider for the second consecutive evening.

The victory improves the Heat's record back to .500 (5-5) while the Huskies drop just their second of the Canada West season (6-2).

Bussard would finish with 16 kills and 13 digs for the homeside in the victory, while Hellen Lacava also finished with a double-double thanks to 11 kills and 10 digs.

Saskatchewan was led by Angela Lavoie, who had 19 kills in the match which was more than her first five games combined this season for the Huskies. Emily Koshinsky also finished in double-figures with 16 kills.

The first two frames went fairly convincingly to the home team, as it looked like they were going to cruise to victory following a (25-18) first set and (25-21) second set win.

After the Huskies captured the fourth (25-18), UBCO had a chance in the fourth to close things out with things tied up at 22, but Koshinsky and Olivia Mattern pushed things into a decider.

The Heat (5-5) will get their bye week next weekend and will be back in action in two weeks time against the Brandon Bobcats (0-0). Saskatchewan (6-2) will take to the road next weekend to face the powerhouse Trinity Western Spartans (8-0).
