SASKATOON – The reigning Canada West champion Brandon Bobcats proved to be too much for the Saskatchewan Huskies to handle as they rolled to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 25-19) inside the PAC on Friday night.
A strong night at the service line led the Bobcats to victory, as they recorded 10 aces on the night with Seth Friesen and Robin Baghdady both compiling three in the match.
With the win the Bobcats move to 3-0 on the season while the Huskies drop to 3-2.
Baghdady was dominant in the match, putting up 17 kills on 32 attempts. Not far behind him was Elliot Viles who finished with 10 on the night. Reece Dixon had a game-high 37 assists on the night.
For the Huskies
Dylan Mortensen finished with 12 kills while
Daulton Sinoski and
Connor Murray had nine and eight respectively.
In the opening set the teams traded points until Brandon took over and cruised to the 25-20 victory. With the score 12-11 the visitors went on a run keyed by Baghdady. Four kills and a service ace from the native of Switzerland as well as some errors from the Huskies allowed Brandon to jump out to a 20-15 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
That momentum carried over into the second set. The visitors took the lead from the start and never looked back, jumping out to a 20-12 advantage. A late rally from the Huskies ended on an attack error as Brandon captured the set 25-17.
While it appeared the Bobcats were well on their way to a sweep, the Huskies responded in the fourth. Five kills from
Connor Murray sparked Saskatchewan to a big 25-17 set victory.
The visitors weren't to be denied on the day however as Brandon rebounded for the match-clinching 25-19 victory. Four kills each from Baghdady and Seth Friesen put the game away.
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow with a scheduled start time of 5:00 p.m. That action can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
