CALGARY – The Saskatchewan Huskies brought energy that the Calgary Dinos couldn't match Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym, splitting their weekend series with a four-set win (22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-17).
The Dinos started off slow in the first set but started building momentum through the first half with a barrage of attacks across the entire Dinos lineup. With the Huskies clawing their way back to trail by two points, it was fourth year Hamish Hazelden who executed a well-timed kill to give the Dinos the win the first set (25-22).
This Dinos started off hot in the second set with a huge block from fifth-year Mac McNicol as the team's traded points back and forth until the Huskies pulled ahead to take control of the set. While kills from fifth-year Mitchell Higgin helped to shift the Dinos momentum in the set, the Dinos were outpaced by the Huskies and
Dylan Mortensen who played a key role this set on route to the Huskies taking the set 25-19.
The Huskies continued to build momentum through the third set, starting off with a five-point run, eventually taking control with a seven-point lead. The Huskies sealed the deal in this set with a kill from Mortensen who continued to show his prowess on the court this evening. The Huskies once again started the fourth set with a five-point run before allowing the Dinos to take a pair of points. The Dinos were outpaced by the Huskies in the final set as the Huskies offered up an attack on all fronts to take the set 25-17 and split the weekend.
Leading the Huskies charge this evening was
Dylan Mortensen, who followed up his strong performance from yesterday's game against the Dinos. The third year outside-hitter lead the way with 21 kills on the night to lead his team in points for the evening. On the Dinos side it was fourth-year Hamish Hazelden who offered up eight kills tonight on the court.
The win was the first in the U SPORTS career of new Huskies' head coach
Sean McKay.
