Men's Volleyball Loses In Three to Winnipeg

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen men's volleyball team extended their current winning streak to five with a straight sets (25-21, 25-19, 25-22) victory over the No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg. 

Winnipeg with the win improves to 9-8 on the season while the Huskies with the loss fall to 7-8. 

The first set started out dead even between the two evenly match squads. After exchanging points to 8-8 in the early stages, Winnipeg found their mark led by a pair of David Bommersbach kills to propel Winnipeg to a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. A kill by Andrew Nelson cut the Wesmen to 20-18 late in the set but Winnipeg closed out the set on a kill by Brendan Thielmann followed by a hitting error by the Huskies to lift them to a 25-21 set one victory.

In the second set, strong blocking by Winnipeg's Garrett Jones played a big part in Winnipeg building an early 10-5 lead. After a Huskies hitting error soon after, Winnipeg went into the technical timeout with a lead of 16-8. Saskatchewan made a brief run late in the set closing the gap to 21-17 until the Wesmen went on a 4-2 run to close out the set by a score of 25-19.

Winnipeg once again had the lead at the technical break for the third consecutive set. The Wesmen on a kill by David Bommersbach went into the break leading 16-11. The Huskies closed the gap to three on three occasions down the stretch but two kills by Casey Schouten helped the Wesmen close out the set by a margin of 25-22.

Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with a match high 13 kills and five defensive digs. David Bommersbach finished with nine kills. Garrett Jones led the Wesmen with four total blocks.

Colin Fraser led the Huskies with 10 kills. Andrew Nelson followed with nine kills while adding two blocks. Tyler Epp was next with eight kills.

The two teams will play Saturday night in the early match with first serve coming up at 5:00 p.m.
