Women's Soccer Advances To Canada West Select Six

Box Score

Second-year midfielder Jackson Wiegers recorded one goal and an assist to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 2-0 win over provincial rival the University of Regina Cougars in a Canada West Prairie Division Play-in Saturday afternoon on Field 7 in Saskatoon's PotashCorp Park.

With the win, Saskatchewan will compete in the Canada West Select Six for the second straight season and in a Canada West final playoff series for the third straight year.

Rookie striker Taniel Gay opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a pass from Wiegers. Gay's shot from outside of the box on the right side of the field bent into the top corner of the net.

Pressing for the rest of the match, Saskatchewan had multiple chances to earn the insurance goal before scoring in the 70th minute. Fifth-year midfielder Erica Hindmarsh was stopped on a shot on a scramble in front of the net that was nearly bobbled by Cougars' keeper Ashton Lowry in the 64th minute. Hindmarsh also had a free kick sail over the crossbar in the 67th.

Wiegers was able to add the second goal on a rebound off Lowry's feet in the 70th minute.

The Cougars best chance of the match came in the 60th minute when Sydney Langen dribbled behind Huskie defenders but keeper Kyleigh Vause made the save.

Lowry finished the match making five saves for the Cougars, while Vause made two at the other end of the pitch for the Huskies.

The Canada West Select Six , hosted by the top Pacific Division finisher, will begin Thursday.
