No. 8 Wesmen Top No. 7 Huskies

SASKATOON – The No. 8 University of Winnipeg Wesmen came in to the PAC and took down the No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) Friday night in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan led just once on the night as they dropped to 5-6 on the season. Winnipeg improved to 7-4 with the win.

The night looked promising for the host Huskies as the opened the first set on a 6-1 tear. Saskatchewan continued to lead 9-3 when Winnipeg would roll off five straight points and would eventually take the lead at 15-14 on a Huskie error. From that point on the Wesmen would lead the entire match including a 7-1 run to pull away in the first set.

In the second set, Winnipeg slowly increased its lead to eventually pull away for the eight point win. The Wesmen seemed to be in control of the final set when David Bommersbach put away one of his match-high 13 kills to lead 16-12. Bommersbach finished off another kill to set Winnipeg up with match point at 24-20 when the Huskies fought back for a pair of quick points. A Huskie service error would end the set and the match in the Wesmen's favour.

Bommersbach finished with 13 kills on 31 attacks. Brendan Black was efficient for Winnipeg scoring on 8 of his 13 attacks in the match.

Andrew Nelson matched Bommersbach with 13 kills, while Colin Fraser chipped in with eight. Tyler Epp blocked three attacks to go along with four kills.

The two teams meet again Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the PAC.
